On an edge grain (or long grain) board, we cut the boards into thinner strips and glue these strips together with the edge of the wood flipped sideways, showing the length of the grain. These long strips allow us to mix different wood species for different effects as well as make wider boards as we are not limited to the width of the single piece as in face grain boards.
Edge grain boards require more labour than face grain boards but are more affordable than end grain boards and they require less upkeep since the ends of the grain are not fully exposed.
