What’s on Your Cutting Board?

The food you prepare on your board is in direct contact with your board so it’s important to consider what the board has been finished with. Mass produced boards you buy from the grocery or department store may be coated with a petrochemical based lacquer to make them look apealing or nothing at all meaning the wood pores are left open to collect food debries.

We use several finishes on our boards and serving trays all of which are food safe, even toy safe!

Our serving boards are finished in Fiddes Hard Wax Oil, A blend of natural oils and waxes offering exceptional durability and resistance to wear. Hard Wax Oil is suitable for internal timber surfaces including floors, bench tops, furniture and can even be used on children’s toys.

Fiddes is not cheap, costing over $110 a litre, it takes several coats and a almost day between applications thereby adding time and cost but ensures you get a great looking finish that is extreemly durable.

Our chopping boards are finished in our blend of a pure food grade mineral oil, fractionated coconut oil and 100% australian bees wax that is free from debris and has beeen correctly heated to prevent burning or colouring of the natural wax to ensure your board not only looks great, ensures your board resists bacteria and prevents the board cracking and warping

These finishes leave a pure oil that won’t go rancid and makes it a far superior oil for seasoning your cutting board. This process also makes it safer to use rather than regurlar organic cooking oils like olive and coconut oil, which can go rancid over time.

The process we use costs more and takes more time to apply but we at SAP Woodcraft believe your health and the longevity of your board warrant the additional cost.
