Why the finish on your chopping board is important?
The food you prepare on your board is in direct contact with your board so it’s important to consider what the board has been finished with.
Mass-produced boards you buy from the grocery or department store may be coated with a petrochemical-based lacquer to make them look appealing or nothing at all meaning the wood pores are left open to collect liquids and food debris, a bacteria breeding ground.
We use several finishes on our boards and serving trays all of which are food-safe, even toy safe!
Our serving trays are finished in Fiddes Hard Wax Oil, a blend of natural oils and waxes offering exceptional durability and resistance to wear. Hard Wax Oil is suitable for internal timber surfaces including floors, bench tops, and furniture and can even be used on children’s toys.
Quality Hard Wax Oil is not cheap, costing over $110 a litre, it requires several coats and a day between applications thereby adding time and cost but ensuring you get a great-looking finish that is extremely durable.
Our chopping boards are finished in our own manufactured blend of pure food-grade mineral oil, lemon oil, carnauba wax and beeswax to ensure your board not only looks great but also ensures your board resists bacteria, liquids and smells whilst preventing the board from cracking and warping
Our finishes won’t go rancid and are a far superior oil for seasoning and sealing your cutting board. Organic cooking oils such as olive can go rancid over time.
The process we use costs more and takes more time to apply but we at SAP Woodcraft believe your health and the longevity of your board warrant the additional cost.
